FROM THE VISIONARY RADIO NEWS CENTER, I'M JEFF KING WITH MAUI TV NEWS ALOHA AUNTY GENOA. HAWAIIAN MUSIC LEGEND AUNTY GENOA LEILANI KEAWE - A FIXTURE IN THE ISLANDS MUSIC SCENE - DIED THIS MORNING IN HER SLEEP AT HER HOME ON O'AHU. SHE WAS 89. Her last public performance took place on Jan. 31, but she continued to sing for the staff at The Queen's Medical Center. The family said Aunty Genoa had been battling breast cancer for the last 10 years, and it spread to her arm 18 months ago. She had turned down chemotherapy or breast surgery – a decision that her son believes "extended her life." FUNERAL SERVICES ARE PENDING. AT A MEETING TOMORROW IN HELENE HALL IN HANA, RESIDENTS WILL HEAR A PROPOSAL FROM SKYDIVE HAWAII ON THEIR PLANS TO START TEACHING SKYDIVING OVER EAST MAUI. THE PUBLIC MEETING STARTS AT FIVE. FROM THE VISIONARY RADIO NEWS CENTER, I'M JEFF KING WITH MAUI TV NEWS One of Hawaii's most treasured musicians and singers, Aunty Genoa Leilani Keawe, died early this morning. (Nat Snd-5-8 sec). Keawe's career began in 1939. The 89-year-old Hawaiian music performer battled illness for the last decade of her life. TRIBUTES TO AUNTY GENOA ARE POURING IN FROM ACROSS HAWAII AND FROM AROUND THE WORLD. HER LAST PUBLIC PERFORMANCE WAS JUST THREE WEEKS AGO. HER SON SAID AUNTY GENOA PASSED AWAY IN HER SLEEP AT HER HOME ON O'AHU. FUNERAL SERVICES ARE PENDING. A humpback whale calf beached itself on Maui this morning and later died. Officials with the Pacific Whale Foundation said The 8- to 10-foot whale calf , estimtaed to be only a couple of weeks old, came onto shore at Puamana Beach near Lahaina. PACIFIC WHALE FOUNDATION VOLUNTEERS SPOTTED 1,726 HUMPBACK WHALES YESTERDAY IN THE ANNUAL GREAT WHALE COUNT. THE COUNT EXCEEDS THE RECORD COUNT OF 1,265 SEEN IN 2006.
