It’s been a busy day and night in Kihei. A wastewater spill this morning near Kalama Park clogged pipes and traffic. And a vehicle accident this afternoon knotted traffic near Kamaole Park III.
The County of Maui’s Department of Environmental Management reported that a wastewater overflow of approximately 21,875 gallons occurred this morning due to mechanical failure at the Kihei #6 Pump Station at Kalama Park. The overflow started at 10:57 a.m. and was stopped by 11:11 a.m.
The overflow occurred at three locations; the corner of South Kihei Road and Welakahao Road, the corner of South Kihei Road and Keala Place, and the south end of Halama Street. The overflow entered the storm drain system at Welakahao Road and Keala Place, and the drainage ditch in Kalama Park by the Whale Statue, where signs were posted.
Bacteriological analyses are being conducted, however, the department is confident the overflow did not reach the ocean, and there are no beach closures. The repairs were corrected and the spill sites were cleaned and disinfected. The State Department of Health has been notified.
