In what may seem a formality, for the second time in 2015 – a man who fired at Police officers (but died in the process) is being charged with attempted murder.
The Wednesday, August 5 shootout at Keopuolani Park – where an armed man began shooting at MPD officers, but ultimately dying as a poorer shot, is being charged with First Degree Attempted Murder. The man, 39 year-old Raymond Hodge, had had run-ins with Police on O’ahu and in California – before relocating to Maui roughly two years ago.
Preliminary investigation indicates that on August 6, at about 8:54 p.m., officers responded to a suspicious activity complaint at the Keopuolani Park, Kahului. Officers arrived on scene about 8:57 p.m. and approached an adult male and made contact. Upon speaking with the male, he subsequently removed a small caliber handgun and fired at the officers.
The suspect hit no officers – but was struck by officers’ bullets at least 11 times. Approximately eitght of the suspect’s shots struck a police cruiser. Elevent bullets hit the suspect in the mid-body. A total of more than 50 shell casings have been recovered from the scent.
Citizens have expressed concerns as to where the other 40+ bullets landed. The are is densely populated with homes and families.
The first such officer-involved incident happened in Wauluku on May 22. Read that original report here.
Neither investigation is officially complete. The common element between the two is the First Degree Attempted murder charge against each suspect.
