“Unscheduled” and suspicious. at 2:40 a.m. today, Pa’ia and Kahului firefighters were called to a fire along Baldwin Avenue in Pa’ia. When they arrived they discovered not one but two brushfires burning about 200 yards apart.
Paia firefighters arrived at 2:47 a.m. and found two separate fires burning within the sugar cane field, just mauka of Paia Gym, on the Kahului side of Baldwin Ave. By 2:57 a.m. Paia firefighters and a Kahului water tanker had the fire under control. About 200 yards separated the two fires, with each one burning around 2,000 square feet.
Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar was called since no notice of cane burning for this area was received.
Cause of the fire was undetermined. There were no structures threatened and no injuries.
