A Maui man has died after the scooter he was riding crashed into a Cadillac Monday night.
Maui Police say 54 year-old Marshall Carvalho of Wailuku was riding a 2013 Genuine Buddy Scooter late Monday along Kahului Beach Road and Kaihee Place. The collision occurred when the scooter, traveling south within the outer lane of Kahului Beach Road, collided into a 2006 Cadillac CTS 4DSD, negotiating a left turn onto Kaihee Place. The 2006 Cadillac CTS, operated by a 25 year-old Kahului man, was traveling north on Kahului Beach Road prior to executing the turn onto Kaihee Place from a designated left turn lane.
Carvalho was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the operator of the Cadillac CTS was wearing his seatbelt and was not injured in the crash. CARVALHO was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
The involvement of speed, drugs, and alcohol are still pending as the investigation is ongoing.
This is Maui County’s 15th fatality for 2015, as compared to 15 at the same time as last year.
