The county has reached a tragic milestone no one wanted to see. There have now been 14 fatalities from motor vehicle accidents this year. That is the same number as last year at this time and one of the highest in the last decade.
This morning, just before 8 a.m., a four year-old boy was struck and critically injured by a Toyota Sienna. Both are residents of Ka’anapali. The motor vehicle crash occurred fronting 133 Hakui Loop in Ka’anapali. The crash occurred when a maroon Toyota Sienna, that was traveling north on Hakui Street, struck a four year-old boy that was within the roadway. The Sienna did not appear to have any damages resulting from the crash.
As a result of being struck, the boy suffered life threatening injuries and was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center Emergency Room in Critical condition. Once at the Emergency Room, the boy succumbed to his injuries and died. The 46 year-old female operator of the Sienna was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash and did not report any injuries.
The involvement of speed, alcohol, and drug impairment do not appear to be factors in this crash however, they remain under investigation.
This is the third fatal crash in less than a week involving children. Last Saturday a one year-old boy was killed in Kihei when a pickup truck reversed over the lad. Later Saturday, a 11 year-old boy was behind the wheel of a car that kocked over and fatally injured an 87 year-old women. It is believed the boy was the victim’s grandson.
