Maui Police have released more details about the fatal crash Monday night that killed a 72 year-old man and a 16 year-old boy. Both died at the scene of the accident on Hana Highway at Ho’okele Street.
The driver of the Ford Taurus who was killed has been identified as Ronald John Dean from Auburn, WA. Also killed in the crash was 16 year-old Noah Joshua Chapman from Boise, ID. A 69 year-old woman and a 14 year-old boy were critically injured in the crash and are being treated at Maui Memorial Medical Center. An update indicates they both have been upgraded to stable condition.
The crash happened at 10:49 Monday night when a Ford F-150, driven by 36 year-old Roman Semes of Haiku, was traveling eastbound on Hana Highway. The Taurus was attempting a left turn onto Ho’okele Street from the designated left turn lane. The pickup truck struck the Taurus – killing the driver and the young boy. Preliminary investigation and witness accounts say that Semes attempted to flee the scene on foot. He was apprehended nearby by officers responding to the call. He sustained minor injuries in the crash and was treated and released by medics into Police custody.
Semes has been arrested and charged with the following:
- Two Counts of Negligent Homicide in the First Degree
- Two Counts of Negligent Injury in the First Degree
- Accidents involving Death/Personal Injury
Semes was later released pending investigation of the case. The involvement of speed, drugs, and alcohol are still pending as the investigation is ongoing.
Ronald Dean and Noah Chapman are the 10th and 11th people to die in traffic accidents on Maui this year.
