The incident began around 4:30 yesterday afternoon. A traffic stop was conducted by Wailuku Patrol Officers on a Sports Utility Vehicle along Lower Main Street and Hookahi Street in Wailuku. As soon as the SUV was stopped, an adult male passenger immediately exited the vehicle and fired a weapon at Police. An exchange of gun fire ensued.
Investigation revealed that the passenger exited the vehicle and shot at the police officers first while fleeing. The officers returned gun fire striking the responsible. The shooter was taken to the Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition for treatment.
The man was treated, however, later expired. Cause of death is pending autopsy results. The name of the responsible is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. It may appear a formality – but the man who fired on police will be charged with attempted murder.
The driver of the vehicle was taken into custody for questioning and later released pending further investigation.
No injuries sustained by police officers or bystanders as a result of this incident.
