Maui TV News was not the first news outlet in the state to report on the string of sexual assault crimes racked up a male employee of the Maui Police Department last Saturday in Upcountry Maui. However, we are just as frustrated as other news outlets who are being told “…No other information is available pending the outcome of the investigation.”
The story broke on MauiWatch and Mauinow before a deeper investigation on Hawai’i News Now that witnesses knew the suspect and knew he was employed by MPD. This story followed the release of the arrest and booking of OVUII charges against an eight-year MPD female officer – including a booking photo, name, age, assignment and related charges. Her crime occurred a day after the Pukalani “streak” of offenses.
Comments and feedback on MauiWatch and Mauinow have heavily leaned toward outrage and charges of “good old boys” vs. women. As one commenter noted, “…is her case not also under investigation? How come we know everything about her and nothing about him…?
Maui TV News has posed these questions to the MPD. We’ll report what we learn. Meanwhile, following is the current status report of the “Pukalani Flasher” case:
“On 05/30/15 beginning at approximately 1251 hours, police received numerous calls regarding a male exposing his genitals and masturbating in a vehicle in the Pukalani Terrace parking lot and the parking lot for the Hannibal Tavares Community Center. Callers described the male to be in his 40s to 50s, approximately 200 lbs., driving a green colored Toyota 4Runner. Investigators are pursuing a possible lead provided by at least one of the callers. Five separate Sex. Assault IV cases were initiated and the investigation is ongoing.
“The suspect in this case is an employee of the Maui Police Department and he is on personal leave. This case is under investigation by the Criminal Investigation Division. No other information is available pending the outcome of the investigation.”
