KAILUA – At noon Thursday, Paia firefighters were called to the Bamboo Forest trail in Kailua, for a female hiker that injured her knee and was unable to walk out.
A Kahului rescue crew aboard Air 1 located the 57-year-old female visitor from Bellevue, Washington, at the base of the 5th pool on the Bamboo Forest hike. The woman lost her footing on the slippery rocks and injured her knee.
The Air 1 helicopter airlifted her to an open pasture near Hana Highway, where the woman declined to be seen by paramedics. She opted to seek treatment on her own and left with her husband by private vehicle.
