Residents and motorists in the Haiku area should be aware that there will be two Department of Public Works road projects that will affect area traffic next week.
The first is the Haiku Road Culvert Replacement Project, which will begin on Monday, May 11, at 6 a.m. This project will repair the existing drainage system under the roadway as well as make road improvements and repairs. Because of the nature of the work Haiku Road will be shut down completely although motorists will still have access to Fukushima Store and Haiku Marketplace from Kokomo/Haiku Road.
Then on Saturday, May 16, reconstruction work on Kokomo Road will continue, this latest project located between Lilikoi Road and half a mile down from the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses church. The work will be done in segments and during weekend hours only, beginning on May 16th, from 6 a.m. on Saturdays to 10 p.m. on Sundays.
During these days and times Kokomo Road will be completely closed to traffic. Residents mauka of the construction zone will be able to access their properties through Kokomo Road via Makawao Avenue while residents on the makai side will be allowed access through Haiku Road.
All other traffic will be detoured through Kauhikoa Road for access between Haiku and Makawao. Both the Haiku Road and Kokomo Road projects are expected to last for several months at least. During this time motorists are advised to expect delays and to use caution and to follow all traffic control signs, devices and flag personnel while driving through work zones. Mahalo for your patience and understanding.
