A news story that broke on Monday from Hawaii News Now has opened another chapter. According to the HNN report, a Maui woman says her car was rear-ended Sunday night around 8 p.m. by a car driven by another woman. Instead of stopping to check for damage or render aid, the offending vehicle reportedly sped off. The victim said she gave chase and memorized the license plate of the car that hit her. The incident began at the intersection of Hana Highway and Kamehameha Avenue.
Today Maui Police say the victim described the car as a silver colored vehicle similar to – or possibly was – a a Honda Civic with a large, aftermarket muffler. The victim said the driver of the other car who left the scene of the accident appeared to be a local female.
The victim reported following the vehicle on Kamehameha Avenue until she could obtain a license plate number (LBD 470) which came out to an unmarked Maui Police Department vehicle. Following the report, a check was conducted at the officer’s home and the police vehicle was inspected and found to be undamaged and the vehicle was cold to the touch indicating that it had not been recently driven.
The license plate mentioned by the female operator does not match a Honda Civic sedan. Maui Police say their investigation to identify the responsible driver and the vehicle continues.
