A motor vehicle crash that snarled traffic along Hana Highway in Kahului had a deadly ending.
Maui police say that – at 4:10 p.m. today, a black 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe was traveling eastbound in the right lane of Hana Highway near the Ho’okele Street intersection. At one moment, the driver of that vehicle was forced to stop suddenly because of a stopped car in front. The driver veered right, toward the shoulder – striking a pedestrian who was walking along the highway shoulder.
That pedestrian sustained critical, life-threatening injuries and was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition.
The 46 year-old man died from his injuries a short time later. The 21 year-old driver of the Hyundai did not suffer any injuries. He was wearing a seatbelt.
This is Maui County’s third fatal traffic incident of 2015. Identification of the victim is pending notification of family members.
