Hawaii-born Marcus Mariota, fresh on the heels of his championship season and collecting nearly every award possible, has been selected as quarterback by the Tennessee Titans. Mariota was the number two overall pick in the NFL draft today. Jameis Winston was selected in the first position by the Tampa Bay Bucaneers.
The star quarterback for the Saint Louis School Crusaders in Honolulu and University of Oregon Ducks football teams becomes the highest picked Hawaii-born football player in NFL Draft history.
Mariota watched the moment with a huge gathering of supporters in the Saint Louis clubhouse in Honolulu. Mariota was the star quarterback for the Saint Louis Crusaders in his one and only year starting as a senior. He led the team to national recognition before joining the Oregon Ducks and obliterating nearly all records there.
Speculation has roared around this year’s draft with the Philadelphia Eagles promising the moon to add Mariota to their ranks. Others clamoring for his affection included the Saint Louis Rams and the Houston Texans.
Experts are already saying Mariota will likely start ahead of second year Titan QB Zach Mettenberger.
Mariota claims virtually every title possible for a football player from Hawaii. He may be a Honolulu boy – but he is a part of the greater ‘ohana to which we all belong.
