The National Weather Service has issued a WIND ADVISORY for MAUI COUNTY, from 6:00 p.m. this evening until 6:00 p.m. Wednesday.
A Wind Advisory means that sustained winds of at least 30 mph, or gusts of at least 50 mph are expected.
Strong winds are expected over exposed areas of Maui County.
EFFECTS: Expect northeast winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts over 50 mph through tonight. Main areas for the strongest winds will be over and around mountainous terrain. Locations in the advisory include but are not limited to the following locations: Lanai City, Kahului, Maalaea and Lahaina.
IMPACTS: WINDS THIS STRONG CAN BRING DOWN TREE BRANCHES AND MAKE DRIVING DIFFICULT, ESPECIALLY FOR HIGH PROFILE VEHICLES.
PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES: MOTORISTS SHOULD USE EXTRA CAUTION.
As a result of these strong trade winds – generally from the east, the National Weather Service has continued the HIGH SURF ADVISORY for EAST FACING SHORES of MAUI and MOLOKAI, in effect until 6:00 a.m. Thursday.
The HIGH SURF ADVISORY for NORTH FACING SHORES OF MAUI and MOLOKAI has been canceled.
A High Surf Advisory means that high surf will affect beaches in the advisory area, producing rip currents and localized beach erosion.
EFFECTS: Strong trade winds over and upwind of the State will produce rough surf along east facing shores of most islands.
Expect surf of 6 to 9 feet along east facing shores through Wednesday night.
Forecast surf heights are estimates of the height of the face or front of waves.
IMPACTS: EXPECT STRONG BREAKING WAVES, SHORE BREAK, AND STRONG LONGSHORE AND RIP CURRENTS, MAKING SWIMMING DIFFICULT AND DANGEROUS.
PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES: BEACHGOERS, SWIMMERS, AND SURFERS SHOULD HEED ALL ADVICE GIVEN BY OCEAN SAFETY OFFICIALS AND EXERCISE CAUTION. BOATERS SHOULD EXPECT RECREATIONAL SURFERS AND BODY BOARDERS UTILIZING HARBOR CHANNELS TO ACCESS SURFING AREAS.
