The Plans,Training, Research and Development Section of the Maui Police Department is conducting a one month feasibility study on the use of body-worn cameras. The study began April 6. The results of the study will assist the Maui Police Department in making informed decisions about the implementation of this technology in the future.
For the study, MPD is using the Axon Body and Axon Flex Cameras by Taser International. Use of these cameras is not indicative to any future use or decision to solely utilize these proprietary cameras by Taser International.
TASER’s AXON body is an on-body camera with a core uni-body. TASER’s AXON Flex is a wearable camera system incorporating multiple mounting options.
This week’s edition of Maui TV News features an interview with MPD Chief Tivoli Faaumu discussing the use of body cameras. The study was announced in March – and only coincidentally happened before shocking confrontations between police and suspects on the mainlans that turned deadly.
