PUKALANI, MAUI – At about 6:15 p.m. Wednesday evening, Makawao firefighters responded to reports of a brush fire in the area of Ikea Place in Pukalani.
Firefighters arrived on scene to find about one acre of sugar cane on fire, downslope of Ikea Place and moving very quickly towards the southwest, away from area homes.
It has been confirmed by Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar that this is an unscheduled cane burn. Estimates as of 8:15 p.m. this evening are that it has consumed about 100 acres of sugar cane. HC&S personnel and heavy equipment were on scene trying to contain the blaze.
Maui Fire Department brought the Makawao engine and a Kahului water tanker on scene monitoring the fire in case there was a shift in wind direction and the fire became a threat to homes.
There were no road closures. As of the latest report, no structures are threatened. In fact, one videographer turned the event into a music-scored video. Watch it on MauiWatch.
