Lots of water…and fortunately no serious injuries. But the spectacle of a vehicle vs. hydrant last night in Lahaina made for a deep, wet headache for motorists, police and public works crews.
Maui police say that, shortly after 11 p.m., a vehicle struck the fire hydrant along Honoapi’ilani Highway sending a geyser skyward and flood the highway. Initially, police closed the highway between Papalaua Street and Hinau Streets. Shortly thereafter, the closure was extended to Keawe Street.
The mess was cleaned up, street drained and the road reopened at 1:03 this morning.
