A Kahului man is clinging to life this afternoon after a crash today in Kahului.
Maui Police say the crash happened at 12:32 p.m. today when a black moped executed a left turn from 349 Hanakai Street. MPD investigators say the man failed to yield and was struck by a 2008 Toyota Tacoma traveling south on Hanakai Street.
As a result of the crash, the 56 year-old moped operator suffered critical, life-threatening injuries. He was transported to the Emergencu Room of Maui Memorial Medical Center. The 25 year-old driver of the pickup truck, also from Kahului, was alone – and did not sustain any injuries.
The moped rider was not wearing a helmet. The Toyota driver was wearing a seatbelt. Police say there is – so far – no indication of the involvement of drugs and/or alcohol. They have ruled out speed as a factor in the crash.
