After questions arose about how a suspected murderer could be released just nine weeks before allegedly killing again, Maui Police have released a few more details in the earlier case.
A report, issued late last night by Lt. William J. Juan of the MPD reads:
“On 01/02/15, the victim, Gail OTSUKA, was found alone in the residence. Detectives interviewed individuals that lead them to Keoni V. TOMAS. TOMAS was brought to the station for questioning, however, he asked for a lawyer. Detectives noticed cuts on his hands at which time he was arrested for Murder II.
“After conferring with the Prosecutor’s Office it was determined that TOMAS was to be released pending further investigation. Evidence recovered from the scene was sent to Oahu for DNA analysis. The results of the DNA analysis is still pending. The investigation into this case is still ongoing.”
Tomas was arrested again yesterday after police found evidence connecting him to the murder of his mother, 43 year-old Kimberly Vinuya. Read the details of that arrest here.
