As Maui Police expand their investigation into the apparent murder of a Kahului woman early Monday, the suspect they have in custody may also have ties to an apparent murder earlier this year.
Today at 12:15 p.m., 25 year-old Keoni Vinuya Tomas of Kahului was formally charged for the offense of murder in the second degree. The victim is the suspect’s mother, 43 year-old Kimberly Vinuya. Her lifeless body was discovered early Monday when police responded to a suspected abuse call. She had been stabbed to death. Tomas – found elsewhere in the home – reportedly had evidence potentially linking him to the crime.
Turns out the suspect is also under investigation in the January 2 death of 61 year-old Gail Otsuka. That suspicious death in Kahului has led Police to investigate the potential involvement in both murders by the suspect, Keoni Vinuya Tomas. That woman’s body was found in a burning house under circumstances police termed as suspicious. Tomas was released after his arrest that day while police began their investigation.
Bail for Tomas has been set at $1,000,000.
