MAKENA – At about 2:20 p.m. Saturday afternoon, Wailea firefighters responded to an exhausted hiker near La Perouse bay, at Keonioio in south Maui.
An 85 year-old man – part-time Kihei resident – was hiking on the King’s Trail with a female friend when he became exhausted and was unable to walk out on his own. Another hiker on the trail found the couple, then called for help after hiking out to the trailhead at La Perouse bay.
At about 3 p.m., the Maui Fire Department’s Air 1 rescue helicopter, with a rescue crew on board located the man about a half-mile into the trail, in the lava field southeast of the bay. He was complaining of shortness of breath. They airlifted the man to an improvised landing zone near the trailhead, where he was checked out by paramedics.
He was treated at the scene and refused transport.
