A Lahaina man has been arrested and charged with negligent homicide stemming a fatal crash nearly a year ago.
Maui Police arrested 31 year-old Lawrence Duran this morning shortly after 8 a.m. on the weight of a warrant issued following an indictment. The accident happened at 1:45 a.m. on March 18, 2014, at the intersection of Honoapi’ilani Highway and Shaw Street in Lahaina. Duran has been charged in the negligent homicide death of Kelley Peterson, a 26 year-old woman who had no local address.
Both the victim and the drive sustained serious injuries. Peterson succumbed to her injuries at Maui Memorial Medical Center. Duran was treated at the hospital.
The car they were riding in struck a traffic signal pole at a high rate of speed, then continued across the intersection – striking another pole.
Duran has been charged with:
- Negligent Homicide in the First Degree
- Operating a Vehicle Under the Influence of An Intoxicant
- Inattention to Driving
- No No-Fault Insurance
Police say Duran’s bail has been set at $100,000 and that he remains in custody since he is unable to raise the necessary funds for bail. No date has yet been announced for arraignment or trial.
