The National Weather Service has continued the FLASH FLOOD WATCH for MAUI COUNTY in effect until 6:00 a.m. Thursday.
A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding. Flash flooding is very dangerous. Remember that it does not have to be raining heavily where you are for flash flooding to occur.
EFFECTS: A shortwave trough will bring abundant moisture, creating the potential for flooding rains over Maui County through tonight.
Heavy rain will bring the threat for flash flooding on Maui. The highest threat areas will be over the windward sides of Maui due to trade wind flow. Excessive runoff may result in rock and mudslides in steep terrain. Fast moving waters may create life threating situations.
PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES: AVOID CAMPING OR HICKING NEAR STREAMS AND LOW LYING AREAS. MONITOR THE LATEST FORECASTS AND BE PREPARED TO TAKE IMMEDIATE ACTION IF FLASH FLOOD WARNINGS ARE ISSUED.
INFORMATION: Maui Civil Defense Agency will continue to monitor the situation. Please listen to your local radio and TV stations or NOAA Weather Radio for any updates. NOAA Weather Radio broadcasts can be reached by calling 1-866-944-5025 FREE. NOAA Weather internet services can be found at www.prh.noaa.gov/hnl.
Pre-recorded advisories and notifications are available 24-hours a day on the Maui County Automated Information System (AIS) by calling 986-1200.
