On February 16, Maui Police Department Sgt. William Hankins was promoted to the Rank of Lieutenant and will be assigned as the Commander of the Hana District.
Hankins began his career with the Maui Police Department in 1991. After graduating from the Police Recruit Academy, he worked in the Lahaina, Wailuku and Kihei Patrol Divisions. In 1997 Hankins was assigned to the Traffic Section OUI Task Force where he served for three years before transferring to the Vehicle Homicide Unit as an investigator.
In June 2007 Hankins was promoted to Sergeant and served in the Hana, Lahaina and Kihei patrol districts as a field supervisor. In July 2013, Hankins was re-assigned to the Traffic Section Vehicle Homicide Unit as the unit’s supervisor. He continued this assignment until his promotion to Lieutenant.
Hankins is one of the original Maui Police Department’s Crisis Intervention Team Officers who have been specially trained to handle incidents with members of the community suffering from a mental health crisis. He has also successfully completed numerous courses from Institute of Police Technology and Management in Motor Vehicle Crash Investigation and Reconstruction.
Hankins is married to his wife Shantell and they have two sons Cody and Dylan.
