Ocean Discovery “discovered” the rocks today on the north side of Lahaina Harbor. Maui Fire Department and Ocean Safety crews were called to the site at 1:35 p.m. todThe initial call said the vessel was “hung up” on a buoy line but upon arrival crews found the vessel had run aground during brisk Kona winds.
Passengers had been offloaded by the time rescue crews arrived, and County crews tethered the vessel to prevent further damage to the reef and – possibly – the shore should the vessel dislodge. The 65-foot vessel was still aground when safety crews left the area. it is also unknown how much fuel is onboard. Rescue crews say no fuel was visible in the water when they left the area.
The vessel operator, Pacific Whale Foundation, is cooperating with authorities from the County, State and the U.S. Coast Guard. State and federal agencies are remaining on the scene with the PWF whale watch boat.
