The National Weather Service has continued the HIGH SURF WARNING for NORTH and WEST FACING SHORES of MOLOKAI and NORTH FACING SHORES OF MAUI, in effect until 6:00 p.m. this evening.
A High Surf Warning means that dangerous, battering waves will pound the shoreline. This will result in very dangerous swimming conditions, and deadly rip currents.
A High Surf Advisory is also in effect for the west facing shores of Maui, Lanai, and Kahoolawe until 6:00 p.m. this evening.
EFFECTS: Surf heights increased above warning threshold again due to a reinforcing northwest swell. Surf will impact areas that are not normally affected by winter swells, including the west facing shores of lanai and some south shorelines, due to the more westerly directional component of the swell.
Surf along north facing shores of Molokai and Maui will be 20 to 30 feet. Along west facing shores of Molokai, 12 to 20 feet.
Forecast surf heights are estimates of the height of the face or front of waves.
EXPECT OCEAN WATER SURGING AND SWEEPING ACROSS BEACHES, COASTAL BENCHES AND LAVA FLOWS, CREATING THE POTENTIAL FOR IMPACTS TO COASTAL PROPERTIES AND INFRASTRUCTURE, INCLUDING ROADWAYS. POWERFUL LONG SHORE AND RIP CURRENTS WILL BE PRESENT AT MOST BEACHES. LARGE BREAKING WAVES WILL AFFECT EXPOSED HARBOR ENTRANCES AND CHANNELS.
PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES: THESE DANGEROUS CONDITIONS MEAN THAT ONLY HIGHLY EXPERIENCED PERSONS SHOULD ENTER THE WATER. INEXPERIENCED PERSONS SHOULD REMAIN OFF BEACHES AND ADJACENT BEACHFRONT AREAS. LARGE BREAKING SURF, SIGNIFICANT SHOREBREAK AND DANGEROUS CURRENTS, MAKE ENTERING THE WATER VERY HAZARDOUS. ANYONE ENTERING THE WATER COULD FACE SIGNIFICANT INJURY OR DEATH. PROPERTY OWNERS SHOULD TAKE ACTION TO PROTECT SHORELINE PROPERTY. MOTORIST SHOULD BE PREPARED FOR POSSIBLE ROAD CLOSURES.
