The new year has gotten off to a sadly busy start for Maui Police. Already, MPD is investigating a murder, at least two burglaries and a report of a downed ultralight craft off South Maui coast.
On January 2, 2015 at about 8:28 p.m. 25 year-old Keoni Vinuya Tomas, from Kahului was arrested in connection with the death of Gail Otsuka and released pending further investigation. Read the original report of the death of Gail Otsuka here.
On January 1, 2015, at approximately 9:18 p.m. the Waiehu Pro Shop, located at the Waiehu Golf Course, Maui, was burglarized. An undetermined amount of cash and property were taken. There is no further information regarding this incident as the investigation is ongoing. Sunday morning this week, thieves were able to get away with an automated teller machine from a cookie shop in Ma’alaea. Read that initial report here.
Then, last night, at approximately 6:07 p.m., MPD units, along with MFD personnel Engine 6 from Kihei Station and Ladder 14 from Wailea Station), Air-1 with Rescue 10 personnel, and the Coast Guard were dispatched to ocean waters outside of Halama Street in Kihei to investigate the report of a downed ultra-light aircraft. Air-1 did a search of the area until darkness prevailed and did not see any evidence to confirm the report. Furthermore, a check with the airport tower confirmed that there were no missing aircrafts. Because there have been no further calls or confirmations regarding the report, at this time, the search has been suspended. If more info is provided, the case may be reopened.
