A Kahului woman is dead and the circumstances surrounding that death have caused Maui Police to open case of suspected murder in the Second Degree. The victim has been identified as 61 year-old Gail Otsuka of Kahului,
Friday morning, January 2, around 7:40 a.m., Wailuku Patrol Officers responded to a call from a man who reported smoke coming from a residence on Moloka’i Akau Street in Kahului. The caller said he had just come from the residence that belonged to his girlfriend and to the victim – the girlfriend’s aunt.
The caller said that he saw items smoldering near a stove. He said he also saw the victim lying motionless in a bedroom.
Officers were able to extinguish the blaze with a fire extinguisher. They, too, observed the body of the victim deceased on a bed. Her injuries presented as “suspicious.”
Members of the MPD Criminal Investigation Division arrived soon and commenced their homicide investigation. The exact cause of Ms. Otsuka’s death will be determined from an autopsy.
