We still don’t know the status of what could be live ordnance found Saturday afternoon off Sugar Beach in North Kihei. A snorkeler reported found it in nearshore waters and brought the device – which resembles a rocket-propelled mortar – to the beach. He called Maui Police who brought in enforcement officers of the Department of Land and Natural Resources. The Explosive Ordnance Team from O’ahu was also contacted.
Police closed the beach 100 feet in each direction but North Kihei Road traffic was not affected. DLNR is in control of the scene. DLNR’s last report was Saturday evening. At that time, the EOD squad had not yet arrived.
