A Kihei man is fighting for his life this morning after a crash just after midnight today. Police say the man failed to yield the right of way to another vehicle, resulting in the collision.
According to the Police report, at 12:23 a.m. today, at the intersection of Mokulele Highway and Mehameha Loop near the Maui Humane Society, the 40-year-old Kihei man was driving a 2006 Suzuki sedan in the mauka direction when he failed to yield.
The Suzuki was struck by a Kihei-bound 2015 Nissan sedan. In the crash, the Kihei man was not wearing his seatbelt. The driver of the Nissan, a 65 year-old man visiting from North Carolina, was. Airbags deployed in both vehicles.
The Suzuki driver sustained major injuries in the crash and was transported to the ER at Maui Memorial Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. The Carolina visitor was treated for minor injuries at the scene and was released there by paramedics.
While their investigation isn’t complete, Police suspect that alcohol was involved in the crash. The factors of speed and/or drugs has not yet been determined.
