A backhoe operator was very lucky today on Moloka’i. In the bad luck department: the backhoe’s blade struck an underground power line. The good news: nobody was hurt and there was no serious property damage.
At 2:14 this afternoon, Maui Fire Department units from Kaunakakai, Ho’olehua and Puko’o responded the the Uluanui Road area of Kawela – southeast of Kaunakakai near the coast. Upon arrival, they encountered a hot brush fire covering about two acres. MFD flew in Air-1 to assist with water drops.
The blaze was brought under control at 3:11 p.m. and crews hope to complete mop-up operations this evening.
