WAILUKU – The County of Maui’s Department of Environmental Management reported that a wastewater overflow of approximately 1,424 gallons occurred this morning in Kahului. The overflow was reported at 9 a.m. and was stopped by 10 a.m.
The overflow was caused by a blockage of an unknown material in the mainline. The wastewater flowed from a manhole on Aleo Place, Kahului, and flowed along the roadway into a French drain that does not connect to the ocean or any waterway.
The blockage was cleared, the wastewater was pumped up, and the spill site was cleaned and disinfected. The State Department of Health has been notified. Ick but it could have been worse.
