A man is in police custody tonight and a Maui Police officer is recovering from a minor injury in what is being classified as an attempted murder case. The drama unfolded this morning shortly after 9 a.m. at the end of Makena Road in Ahihi Kinau Preserve – also known as La Perouse Bay.
At 9:06 a.m. today, Wailuku and Kihei officers converged on the area in search of a suspected stolen car – identified by the onboard GPS system. A Kihei patrol officer located the car near Makena State Park in a gravel parking area. The lone male operator was in the process of exiting the lot when the officer ordered him to stop and exit the vehicle.
The officer exited his vehicle, and stood by the driver side door, and commanded the suspect to exit his vehicle. The suspect started reversing the stolen car, forcing the officer to re-enter his patrol vehicle to give chase. As the officer got back into his vehicle the suspect/operator stopped. As the officer exited the patrol car a second time, the suspect accelerated the stolen vehicle in the direction of the officer. The officer was able to jump back into the patrol vehicle, but not before getting hit by his car door which was struck by the stolen vehicle. The officer received minor injury from the impact.
The suspect within the stolen vehicle headed back towards Kihei. As he came to the area of Ahihi Bay he observed patrol officers heading in his direction. The suspect, operator of the vehicle, then reversed the vehicle in an attempt to get away. As he tried to go around a patrol vehicle which was behind him he collided into the patrol vehicle and also hit a tree. The stolen vehicle then stalled and the suspect exited the vehicle.
Officers chased the suspect and subdued him, placing him under arrest. on the following charges:
- Attempted Murder
- Criminal Property Damage in the First Degree
- Resisting Arrest
- Unauthorized Control of a Propelled Motor Vehicle
- Unauthorized Entry into a Motor Vehicle.
The suspect remains in police custody while charges are pending and Kihei Detectives continue to actively work this investigation. The identities of the injured officer and the suspect have not been released. The area was closed for several hours today while Police conducted their investigation.
