A Kansas man died Wednesday on Maui while swimming off Keawakapu Beach in Kihei. Maui Police, Firefighters and Paramedics responded to the 12:12 p.m. call.
When they arrived, 57 year-old Michael R. Higgins of Lenaxa, KS, was receiving cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The man had been spotted motionless and unresponsive in the near shore waters. First responders took over while there were still signs of life. Higgins was transferred to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition. Life saving efforts subsequently failed and he was pronounced dead.
While the cause of death is an apparent drowning, an autopsy will confirm the official cause.
