Maui Police and fire investigators have released more details about that drowning off Black Rock at Ka’anapali Sunday.
Shortly after noon, 80 year-old Alva Sanders, a man visiting Maui from Kennewick, WA, was spotted floating in the ocean near the pier by the rock formation known as Black Rock. Firefighters and Ocean Safety personnel were dispatched. The man was found by two surfski paddlers about 100 yards from shore. The two yelled for help and UFO Parasailing staff sent a Zodiac to assist.
The Zodiac brought the victim to shore fronting Leilani’s Restaurant and, along with Ocean Safety Jet Ski operator, began CPR. Firefighters and medics on scene a few minutes later took over CPR. Efforts to revive the patient were unsuccessful. Sanders was pronounced dead at the scene.
While drowning appears to be the case, the official cause of death will be determined following an autopsy.
