In fact there was no one around when firefighters from Kahului responded to a fire call at 4:09 a.m. today. They found a homeless camp in flames off Ho’okele Street behind the HGP building. About 300 square feet of brush – along with personal items including tents, clothing, stoves, shopping carts and other items – in flames. The fire was brought under control within 12 minutes and called extinguished at 4:48 a.m.
There was some damage to the structure and HGP product stored outside of the building, according to the report released this morning by MFD Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga. Damage to the structure was limited to the exterior of the building. The integrity of the building was not compromised. Monetary losses to the building and product were estimated at $4,000. The cause of the fire was not determined. The homeless camp was vacated at the time of arrival. No injuries were reported.
