A man who died after his car plummeted over the cliff near the Pali lookout along Honoapi’ilani Highway has not yet been publicly identified. Maui Police and fire crews responded to an alarm today at 8:44 a.m. Fire crews from Wailuku and Kahului were joined by an Ocean Safety jet ski and the Air-1 rescue helicopter. Skin divers in the area came upon the submerged vehicle with a man still inside. The vehicle had dropped some 40 feet down the cliff and was submerged in about 10 feet of water roughly 10 yards from shore.
Rescue crews removed the victim from the vehicle and used Air-1 to airlift the victim to a landing zone at the Scenic point Lookout parking lot. Police took over the investigation. The lookout’s parking area was closed during the preliminary investigation. Maui Police have taken over the investigation.
