Maui Fire Department crews spent the night putting out hot spots and watching for flare-ups after a brush fire burned about 10 acres above Keawe Street in Lahaina. The fire was first reported yesterday at 3:49 p.m. Crews from Lahaina and Napili responded along with Air-1 and a fire tanker to the fire about two acres in size mauka of Honoapi’ilani Highway.
Three hours later the fire was called 70 percent contained – but had grown in size to about 10 acres. The fire was contained completely around 9 p.m. Tuesday. Crews – with the assistance of a West Maui Land Company tanker – began mop-up operations. As of 8 a .m. today, crews were still dousing hot spots inside the fire perimeter. There were no injuries or dollar loss in damage. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
