A family of five lost their home to a fire in Haiku Saturday. Maui Fire Department crews from Pa’ia and Makawao responded to an alarm at 2:37 p.m., Saturday, arriving to a fully engulfed 400 square-foot structure in the gulch on Hahana Road. The family – two adults and three children – were safe outside. Volunteers from the American Red Cross came to the scene to assist with lodging and accommodations.
Fire investigators were not able to immediately determine the cause of the fire – which was brought under control at 3:30 p.m. Estimated losses are $60,000 to the building and $50,000 for the contents. MFD’s investigation continues.
