The Maui Marathon got off to an odd start this morning when an intoxicated man drove his car through a crowd of participants. Maui Police say 22 year-old Rustyn Pajimola-Aiu of Kahului was driving a 2014 Acura four-door sedan in the parking lot of Queen Kaahuman Center about five minutes after the scheduled start of the marathon and half-marathon.
Attempting to leave the lot at the Onehee /Wakea Road exit, he encountered a large crowd of people. That didn’t stop him and Pajimola-Aiu’s car struck a 53 year-old man from Kahului. Though dragged about 30 feet, the man only sustained minor injuries. He was treated by paramedics and released at the scene. That man was not a race participant.
Pajimola-Aiu was charged with Operating a Vehicle Under the Influence of an Intoxicant and was also arrested on an outstanding bench warrant. His bail was set at $1,200.
