A California visitor dies Thursday afternoon after his car plunged 60 feet down a cliff near DT Fleming Beach in Kapalua. Maui Police say 19 year-old Martin Castro, Jr., of Napa, California was the lone occupant in a 2014 Nissan sedan. MauiWatch reportes that teams recovered Castro’s body from the scene early this morning.
At 2:42 p.m . Thursday, an area resident reported seeing the car upside down in shorebreak near Mile Marker 31 of Honoapi’ilani Highway. Checks made by Fire crews from Lahaina and Ocean Safety officers revealed the victim still inside the vehicle. Castro was not wearing a seatbelt.
Speed is suspected as a factor in the crash. Police say the vehicle apparently left the roadway, ran up an embankment and off the cliff. The involvement of drugs and alcohol have not been determined.
Castro’s death is the 17th fatality on Maui County roads this year, compared with 11 at the same time last year.
