At 11:46 a.m. today Maui Fire Department crews and a team of volunteers from public and private sectors began to battle a brush fire above Ka’anapali Coffee Estates. Early estimates put the size of the fire at 40-60 acres.
Three engine companies are fighting the fire along with three MFD tankers, two mini brush trucks, a bulldozer from Maui County Public Works and an additional tanker from West Maui Land Company. Choppers Air-1 and Air-2 are also assisting with water drops.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. There have been no reports of injuries and no property damage estimates have been made. The fire does not appear to be an immediate threat to area homes.
While not confirmed, Maui Electric crews are working to restore power to nearby Pu’ukoli’i from what may have been caused by the blaze. The first outage was reported at 11:59 a.m. Power was partially restored by 1:10 p.m.
