Maui Fire crews are still battling the blaze above Ka’anapali Coffee Farms that was first reported at 11:46 this morning. Maui Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga says that – as of 8 p.m. – the fire is approximately 40 percent contained.
Mainaga says crews will stay on the scene as long as it takes to knock down the fire and protect lives and property. Air water drops from MFD units Air-1 and Air-2 were grounded by darkness but will return to the scene at first light if needed. Once again, MFD men and women have proven their incredible skills at keeping Maui and Mauians safe. Visitors too.
According to the chief’s report, several electric utility poles were impacted by the fire. Darkness prevented a specific count of affected poles by MFD. Maui Electric Company crews finally restored power to all customers by 6 p.m. in the Pu’ukoli’i area. They also restored customers to full power in Spreckelsville who lost juice earlier today in an unrelated event. They were restored by 6:03 p.m. MECO has not released details of the cause of the Spreckelsville power failure. MECO crews knew exactly how many poles – and customers – were affected, and they fixed them all.
