The fires are out, and there were no significant monetary damages or injuries – but yesterday’s three separate fires, on and near Hawaiian Commercial and Sugar land are still under investigation.
The first fire was reported at 1:47 p.m., Wednesday. Maui County Firefighters from Paia, Makawao, Kahului, along with Air-1 and HC&S personnel found themselves battling two unscheduled cane fires in the area across the street from the Holy Rosary Church in Pa’ia. The first fire approximately 3-5 acres in size was quickly three-quarters contained. Baldwin Avenue was closed above the Holy Rosary Church and below the Paia Gym. Size of the second fire was not known for a timetime, but Air-1 made continuous water drops and fire crews made their way to access the area.
Then, at 4:15 p.m. Wednesday, the fire was turned over to HC&S personnel. Approximately five acres was involved in this cane fire. No damages or injuries were reported.
However, yet another fire was reportedless than an hour later. That fire, which is located in another gulch on HC&S land is being handled by HC&S personnel. The first fire handled by fire personnel, remained contained 9nto the evening before being extinguished.
