Maui Police say that, at 12:53 p.m., a 2005 Buick with four people inside was traveling south along Upper Pi’ilani Highway just south of Upper Kanaio Road when the 18 year-old drive apparently left the roadway. Over correcting, the car returned to the road but lost control. the car crossed the road, impacting the mauka rock cliff. The driver was medevaced to Maui Memorial Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. The three male passengers, ages 26, 20 and 16, were also taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The passengers were reportedly all from Keanae.
Police were unable to determine whether seat belts were used. Also, speed, alcohol and drugs have not yet been determined as factors in the crash. Their investigation continues – classified as a near-fatal crash.
