To protect visitor safety, the Summit and Kīpahulu Districts of Haleakalā National Park will close at 3 p.m. Thursday in anticipation of heavy winds and rain. The entrance gates will be locked and the park will not open for sunrise viewing on Friday morning. Park managers will assess conditions on Friday and re-open the park once it is safe to do so.
The Kīpahulu and Hosmer Grove campgrounds will close at noon on Thursday. Back country hikers have been notified they will need to leave the park before 3 p.m. Thursday. In anticipation of Tropical Storm Julio, no back country camping or cabin permits will be issued through the weekend. Existing weekend back country permits have been canceled. Also canceled are the Thursday Waikamoi hike (Summit District) and Saturday cultural demonstrations in the Kīpahulu District.
