Today – Tuesday, July 15, Shaft 33 and Iao Well is shut down for 14 hours while contractors work on connecting the new Wailuku Well to the water system. The shut down began at 5:30 a.m. today. Customers in Kahului, Wailuku, Waihee, Paia, Kihei, Wailea, and Makena are asked to reduce water usage all day Tuesday as water production will be limited until the project is completed.
Shaft 33 is a primary water source for Central Maui with a daily average production of 4.75 million gallons per day. Iao Well was placed in service in January 2013 and provides approximately 300,000 gallons per day. The tie-in project is part of a capital improvement project to install the well pump at Wailuku Well to spread out pumping in the Iao Aquifer. Wailuku Well is expected to be placed in service after construction is completed in 2015.
During this connection work – expected to last until 7:30 this evening – customers are urged to conserve water by turning off irrigation systems and other non-essential uses of water. Water pressure should not be affected. Customers are requested to call the 24-hour service line (270-7633) only if a water problem occurs.
