Despite best efforts, 86 year-old Harry Shimizu of Moloka’i passed away June 4 from injuries sustained in a violent crash on Moloka’i on May 8 of this year. Shimizu was a passenger in a Toyota pickup truck being driven by an 86 year-old woman. The accident happened at 6:39 a.m. May 8 when the eastbound pickup left the roadway along Mauna Loa Highway on Moloka’i, striking a guardrail, climbing an embankment before flipping onto its roof.
Seatbelts and airbags were properly used, and only Shimizu was critically hurt. He was transferred to Maui Memorial Medical Center – treated for his injuries until he passed away June 4.
Shimizu’s death was the 14th traffic fatality of 2014 – compared with eight at this time last year.
