A Wailuku man is in critical condition this morning after the moped he was riding rear-ended a vehicle on South Kihei Road at Ke Ali’i Alanui.
Maui Police say the 7:38 p.m. accident happened when a 51 year-old man, riding a 2013 moped southbound along South Kihei Road impacted a 2013 Nissan multi-purpose vehicle. The occupants, both 36 years old and from Honolulu, were unhurt. The moped rider was transferred to Maui Memorial Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.
The intersection was closed for several hours while Police conducted their on-scene investigation. The moped rider was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. Speed, alcohol and drugs are being investigated as possible contributing factors in the crash.
Investigation reveals that on Monday, June 16, 2014 at about 1938 hours, a Motor Vehicle Collision occurred on South Kihei Road North of Alanui Ke Alii Drive. Preliminary investigation reveals the fifty-one year old male from Wailuku was operating a blue 2013 Kwang Yang moped southbound on S. Kihei Road. The operator lost control of his moped, and struck the rear of a 2013 white Nissan Multi-purpose vehicle, traveling south on South Kihei Road. The operator of the SUV was a thirty six year old male from Honolulu.
The operator of the moped sustained critical life-threatening injuries. He was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center for further treatment. The operator of the SUV and his thirty-six year old passenger also from Honolulu did not sustain any injuries as a result of this crash.
SAFETY EQUIPMENT UTILIZED:
No helmet was utilized by the moped operator at the time of this crash.
SPEED, DRUGS, ALCOHOL:
The involvement of speed, drugs, and alcohol has not been determined as the investigation is still pending.
